Having worked with lighting for over 10 years, an area that stands out which people need help and advice on, is choosing the right ceiling lights! Sounds silly? I know but hear me out.
A lot of people will simply walk into a large department store (or catalogue shop), see a pretty light and buy it! They do not know or consider whether the light of their choice is energy efficient or not, whether the light fitting has a transformer inside it, restricting the ability and making it not so simple for the light to be dimmable! They will not even know/consider if the light fitting they choose will even be bright enough for the area it is to be located, simply if the light is fit for purpose.
Correct me if I am wrong but the technical assistance from staff in the aforementioned stores is limited, as realistically all they know about ceiling lights is what is says in the book in front of them or on the packaging itself, which as far as useful information goes is not a lot!
The solution – Go to an independent lighting specialist or seek advice from a lighting expert.
The Lighting specialist will be able to provide you with product specific information to meet your individual needs, including:
- The size of ceiling lights suitable, dependent upon the height of the ceilings
- The lumens of light you will require to illuminate the desired area
- Advice on colour availability of light fittings i.e. chrome ceiling lights, antique brass ceiling lights or black ceiling lights etc. all depending upon the existing or desired colour, style and decor of your room/s
- Technical advice on lighting opportunities and possible restrictions for example: Is the light you have fallen in love with dimmable or may it require a special type dimmer switch?
Also an important factor for influencing your selection of lighting for your home and a major benefit of visiting a lighting specialist is the ability to coordinate all the lighting within your room/home.
Independent lighting retailers provide accessibility to a vast range of ceiling lights in varying styles and price ranges. The majority of ceiling lights available via independent lighting retailers are part of comprehensive collections which will include matching wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps. This is something that you will very rarely find in a department store but will allow you if desired to enable your lighting choices to flow beautifully.
